Save yourself from Balance Stealers

Posted by Asad 17 September, 2008

Almost all the telecommunication companies are now fed up of scammers making people fool by stealing their balances. The scammer reaches its prey by sending them SMS to send a message or string on a number and win cash or prizes. The person follows what he has been instructed by the sender and as a result loses his money. You might be thinking do people have too much time to make others fool for just fun but its not only fun. Once the person sends that message, he actually loses his balance and that balance is transferred to the account of person asking him to send the message.

All mobile operators are concerned about this fact and want to make their subscribers secure. They might think of developing an algorithm which will check all SMS first and then deliver all those which are safe and not spam. But this will give rise to new problems. Firstly, checking every message will increase operator load and will also increase delivery time. Secondly, sometimes those messages which are important for you might not be able to reach because of some bug in algorithm. Lastly, sometimes your friends or relatives might be asking you to send them balance but you will even not receive message from them.

With all these drawbacks, the companies should definitely try to do something against this act of stealing. They certainly have to do more than just placing disclaimers at their official websites.

Ufone says

“Ufone notifies all its valued subscribers against replying to or acting upon any call or

SMS received which claims to double your balance, win bumper prizes, cash rewards, discount vouchers, or any other surprise gifts. Beware of any SMS which contains a string like ‘03332597334u2u50’ or any call that asks you to give the number on the back of a scratch card as this is fraud and will cause you a loss. Remember, if you receive any such SMS or calls call 333 from your Ufone immediately.”

Telenor says

“Please be aware that some Telenor Pakistan customers are receiving hoax calls and fraudulent SMS informing them that they have won a valuable prize. To get the prize, customers are told to buy some scratch cards and tell the calling party the numbers on them. The fraudulent party immediately transfers the balance to unknown accounts thus depriving the customers of their money. Please also be aware that in some instances, Telenor Pakistan customers are receiving hoax calls and fraudulent SMS asking them to reply. The SMS contains a hidden message which transfers prepaid balance from the customer’s account on reply. PLEASE NOTE THAT SUCH CALLS AND SMS ARE A FRAUD.”

Let’s see what happens in the future and how will mobile companies act against this. We hope to see some good service regarding this very soon!

Oh! BTW. Recently they call SOMEONE to come and collect the prize at telenor’s chandani chowk franchise, RWP CANTT. aND WHEN HE LEFT there, he was robbed in name of telenor.
..
Also, we are receiving auto SMS which when opened at once start dialing the balance transfer number in it and here goes out telenor balance away! Sometimes I think these GSM companies are also behing it, so that customers loose their balance and they benefit from it.
